Nokia – The One Of The Most Eco Friendly Electronics Companies
Written by Francis
Tuesday, 23 March 2010 09:37

According to Greenpeace, Nokia remains as the most eco friendly electronics company with a rating of 7.3/10, and lost a point for not being upbeat on RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances in electronics) Directive revision for adopting methods on added limitations of dangerous materials, and directly forbid substances with bromine and chlorine. The criteria strictly calls for companies on strengthening chemicals policy through preventive actions and also carry the RoHS Directive revision that prohibits more risky substances, particularly BFRs (brominated fame retardants), CFRs (chlorinated fame retardants) and PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) plastic.

Generally, Nokia exemplifies best on toxic chemicals, energy, and poorly on e-waste concerns. A point is added for BFR-free units that were released recently. On toxic chemicals, recent models have been clear of PVC from 2005 and meaning to rid of all these harmful chemicals from the start of 2010 for new models.

A perfect score was given for Nokia’s across-the-board unpaid take-back program spanning 85 countries and giving about 5,000 points for end-of-life units. Maximum points were also given for information presented on disposing of consumer products. But, 3 – 5 percent is very poor for a recycling rate. Supplementary information is looked-for in calculating facts and also requires using recycled plastics outside packaging.

Ratings are done through weighing up the degree on how each electronics companies follow Toxic Tech campaign requirements. Manufacturers must clean up products only with harmless, nontoxic materials for them to be on top. Furthermore, product recycling has to be done sensibly.

Greenpeace desires to lead key advancements on how electronics companies consider the natural environment and resource connection. The organization pushes them on being more apprehensive on how their actions have an effect on our environment.

Guideline updates are given quarterly (every 3 months) in order to give ample time for companies to alter their course of action, which may lead to catastrophe someday. Energy usage, labor standards and other issues not stated are not included in the guide, but Greenpeace gives them due importance in electronic product manufacturing and usage.

Street Fighter Alpha 2 Coming To PSN Exclusively This Thursday
Written by James

It's been a pretty busy weekend newswise, and I was feeling the need to have more E3 announcements spoiled. So while surfing the nets, I checked my social networking sites, and noticed that the Marvel vs Capcom Twitter tried to be sneaky and announce that Street Fighter Alpha 2 would be dropping on the PlayStation Network this Thursday. Nice try guys, but you can't slip anything past me. I'm onto you.

No price has been revealed, but you can more than likely assume a $14.99 price tag. That's probably the high end. It might even only be $10, but I doubt it. Anyway, there\'s not really much else to say at this moment. No screens. No word on whether or not it will be widescreen, or boast the graphical upgrades that Marvel vs Capcom 2 will. All we know is that come June 4th, there\'s going to be a lot of happy Capcom fans out there. Well, at least the ones who own a PS3.

You Get a Gold Star! - Achievements in Gaming
Written by Mike Alfus

thumbs-up

Who doesn't like a good pat on the back every now and then?  Whether it's for doing well in school or your job, it's always nice to see your hard work acknowledged, and in the best case, rewarded.

So why not expect the same for pulling off a really difficult headshot, or for scouring Liberty City for every tiny secret it has to offer?

Achievements in gaming have been growing in popularity, with different systems of stat tracking going into games on the PS3, 360, and PC.  Now I know that achievements are known as "Trophies" for PS3 owners, but since you have to 'achieve' something to get a trophy, I'm going to use the blanket term achievements in order to simplify things.  So don't feel slighted, PS3 owners, it's just to make things a bit easier to read ;)

Top 10 - Changes to the Zelda franchise
Written by Jesus Pena
Thursday, 07 May 2009 16:12

There aren't many games that can hold a candle (Blue OR Red..) to the Legend of Zelda series, and we've certainly seen a lot of variety over the years.  Whether it was that first golden cartridge for the NES over 20 years ago, that not-so-golden side-scrolling, magic-laden follow up (not "golden" in most of our minds, anyways..), an epic adventure on the SNES, the N64 era (with possibly the greatest game of all time), the most recent incarnation on the Wii, and several handheld efforts, a young boy in green named Link has certainly done and seen it all.  It wasn't a constant for the Hero of Time, however.  There have been changes to the story, changes to the character, changes to the arsenal of weapons, and whole bunch of other things.  At the simplest form, we've seen heart containers in the form of 1/1, 1/4, and most recently, 1/5.  Today we take a look at some changes we would like to see in the new incarnation of Link.

The Legend of Zelda, and the story of a boy named Link...

Batman Arkham Asylum: Can the Dark Knight Rise Again?
Written by Jesus Pena
Thursday, 07 May 2009 16:08

Batman videogames.

There have been a few good ones in the history of gaming, but most (if not all) in recent memory have been, well, more Batman and Robin than The Dark Knight, on a quality scale.

Now we have Batman: Arkham Asylum perched on the horizon, hoping to bank on the huge success of the Christopher Nolan reboot that the film series has gotten.  Don't forget about the DC diehards waiting in the wings to put on the famous cowl.  But what does Arkham Asylum needs to do to bring Batman out of his gaming slump?  What does Rocksteady need to accomplish to put the Caped Crusader on the same plane as Kratos and other videogame action heroes?

Riddle me that.

Since Arkham is an action game, combat will be paramount, and possibly the cornerstone around which the rest of the game is built.  Bruce Wayne is no schlub, and he knows how to take care of himself when the fisticuffs go up.  The combat in the game needs to be fast and fluid, with move sets leading into each other so it doesn't feel clunky or disconnected.  Another key element of the combat will be the number of enemies you can take on at once, and how you can dispatch all of them.  Targeting and camera angles will be key here, because a wonky camera or botched targeting can kill an action game, and spell certain death for the Dark Knight himself.

punch-better

The upgrade system is another important area of the game, and it would be great to see a system that would allow you to upgrade Batman as you see fit.  It could be divided into three categories: combat, stealth and gadgets.  Let's say you want a brawler Batman.  Go ahead and upgrade his strength and health, and also unlock more advanced combat combos that would have been otherwise unavailable.  Or if you prefer a Batman a bit closer to Solid Snake, then go for the stealth upgrades, which would improve your ability to hide from enemies, know where the enemies are, and have certain moves that dispatch them quickly and quietly.  Or would you rather be a MacGyver Batman, who can make C4 from toothpaste and copper wire?  Then go ahead and upgrade the utility belt with more gizmos and gadgets than you can shake a batarang at.  There could be special gadgets that get you into secret areas, or open up different paths in the game.

With that in mind, it would be cool if there were items or events that you were able to see only by having Batman upgraded a certain way, making sure you play through the game multiple times with three different play styles to truly experience everything.

Could be a good idea, could be terrible.

It all depends on the execution.

batarang2008

Aside from possible upgrades, the gadgets need to play a significant role in the game, seeing as how they're one of Batman's signature elements. From the trailers that have been released so far, batarangs and the grappling hook have been revealed, but there is the potential for so many more gadgets to make their way into the game. There could be different vision modes for the cowl, perhaps with tiny eye pieces coming down to provide night vision or infra red sight.  There could also be an assortment of mini-bombs, like explosive, gas, and smoke bombs.  A claw gadget could make an appearance as well, allowing Batman to cling to walls and maybe crawl about.  The possibilities are many, so here's to hoping that Rocksteady does it justice.

Stealth is another huge area of Batman's expertise, and with all the dark passageways and side paths that snake throughout Arkham Asylum, Batman should get a good chance to sneak around.  A good cover system is important to a strong stealth element, hopefully with context sensitive movements that would make it easy to move from places of concealment to other cover that lay strewn about.  The grappling hook would also be great for the stealth aspect of the game, allowing you to zip down and grab thugs before zipping back into the darkness.  Stealth is often an area where some action games falter, with it either being pointless, or so maddeningly difficult that the player never feels as if it's worth the trouble.  But Batman isn't Superman; he can't just take on the whole world at once, or go rampaging through it like Wolverine.  He has to pick his battles more carefully, and stealth is a huge part of that.

Since Batman is a great detective mind (and perhaps the greatest detective mind of his time), having good, well thought out puzzles is another important feature that the game should have.  Being that Arkham is a very twisted place, the opportunity for some truly vicious traps and puzzles is amazing, and would add another level of gameplay and pacing.  I'm sure there will be some very simple puzzles involving the batarangs or the grappling hook, but here's to hoping that more complicated, context sensitive puzzles are revealed as the game goes along.

Gameplay aside, the cast of characters is very important to any comic book or superhero game.  It's the characters and the way they interact that makes a gamer truly feel as if they're in a story happening in the Batman universe, rather than just walking around in a dark place in the Batsuit.  The Joker is the main villain, which makes sense, and it's been said that Harley Quinn (editor's note: "mmm") will make an appearance as well.  Being that Arkham Asylum is quite a large place, the chance for other Batman villains to be there is fairly high, giving the game a chance to connect us with those characters.  Villains like Poison Ivy, The Riddler, Two Face, Mr. Freeze, The Penguin, and many others could make an appearance, and should.  And even if they don't, it would be great to see nods to those characters in subtle ways, much like the screenshot that has been seen with a dirtied cell with question marks scrawled in blood across the walls, hinting at the Riddler.

choke

Judging from what I've seen and read so far, Batman: Arkham Asylum is shaping up to look like a great game.  The graphics are incredible, and from the videos and screen shots, it looks like Rocksteady has really captured the atmosphere of Arkham Island.  The fact that the game is not a movie tie-in helps it wonderfully, since that means that development will not be rushed to meet a specific movie release date, which is usually the Achilles heel of most movie tie-in games.

So will the game truly put you in the role of the Dark Knight, stalking through the halls of Arkham to deal punishment and justice?  Or will it leave gamers hanging from the end of their grappling hooks, wondering what the hell happened?

Riddle me that, Batman.

We'll find out later this year.

The Death Of The JRPG

Lost Odyssey Box Art

(Note: This Article contains Lost Odyssey, Gears Of War 2, and Final Fantasy VII Spoilers)

The Beginning

I grew up during the SNES, N64, Dreamcast (yes I owned one), and PS1 era so without question my favorite genre of  games is easily the JRPG. I was raised on the nectar of Final Fantasies and I learned from the Legends of Dragoon,  Mana, and Legaia; I listened to the Tales of Destiny, Eternia, and Phantasia, and am sad to see this genre begin to  circle the drain. The last good JRPG that I played was Lost Odyssey, which was a breath of fresh (though to many, stale) air that entered my lungs like a hurricane. But it seems as if people have lost the patience it takes to sit  through battles and strategize; people complain that the game is too hard as they cast a fire spell on a fireball or physically attack an armored target (madness I know). I explain to my friends who try them that a game isn't all about violent deaths and extreme, almost laughable, amounts of gore; it's about deep character development, a  broad yet distinct story and voice that can only be communicated through this medium of video games, they look me in the face and say "It's boring and I don't get to  shoot anything, thus I don't like it" and that statement makes me sad to hear.

Something that's awesome about video games and the internet is that people love to talk and talk about certain games.  Over time, people have grown impatient (thanks a lot, cell phones!), and they need their information now.  If no information is available, they speculate.  If information is available, they hype.  If a game releases, they rant.  If a game is terrible, they whine.  We here at TWGNEWS are sick of it!  Here are the Top 10 Wii Titles that we're SICK of hearing about!  Talk about something else, people!

The 2009 Game Developers’ Conference has yet to close up and already I’ve come down to one conclusion; the future of gaming is blindingly bright. With telekinetic technologies on the near horizon, virtual reality being improved upon daily, motion based controls finally getting into the swing of things, and systems looking to change the way we buy and play games forever, it’s anyone’s guess who’s going to coming out on top in the next generation. We at TWG got a chance to hit the show floor, trying our hands at anything we could manage to wrap our over-excited fingers (or otherwise) around. Imagination abounds at this year’s event and it was a blast getting to tinker with the dreams.

3d-glasses

3D has been around for a while now, and the first thing that most likely pops into peoples heads is the old school red and blue lens glasses. You know, the cool ones with the red paper frames?

Well, 3D has been getting a lot more popular lately, with more and more movies coming out in 3D, and theaters that support it growing around the country.

But what about games? When do we get to feel the 3D love?

There is a surprise in this Starstruck, look carefully for it!

After a rousing week with Starstruck003 and my trek through Resident Evil 4, I found myself at the crossroads of the TwinGalaxies.   A childhood favorite, and an unattainable record stood at either side.  Would this game remain in the cabinet a golden oldie, or would it become much, much more?  That, my friends, is the question..

With any good story, life finds a way to interject.  While the quest for the LifeForce World Record is definitely on my radar, I have not found the length of free time necessary to take an actual stab at it.  I originally wanted to rip through it early last week, but that got bumped back..and bumped back..and now I’ll be lucky if I can scratch two minutes together.  Unfortunately, the LifeForce record will have to wait..for now.

You’re growing impatient.  Days and weeks seem to drag by.  You’re waiting for a game, and it just isn’t getting there quick enough.  Your palms sweat with anticipation.  Your legs develop a mind of their own and you can’t sit still.
But whats this?  Did you forget?  You haven’t finished your OLD games yet!

Starstruck002: The Incredible Edible BacklogStarstruck002: The Incredible Edible Backlog

Yes, people, its your backlog!  And its HUGE.  Alright, maybe it isn’t dinosauric, but its big enough to take a large chunk out of your freetime, and maybe take you with it.  A backlog is defined as “an accumulation or buildup of unfinished work.”  Yep, sounds about right.

Starstruck001: All We Need Is...

Hi.  I’m “Superstar” Rob Schulz.  And I’m here to tell you about a new product..
One that’s going to change your life…

“Patience!”

In the age of the information superhighway, instantaneous gratification, cell phones and text messages, patience is at an all-time low.  In a world that needs it most, the ability to wait for something without a problem is ever dwindling.  Whats the deal?  Why, people, why?!

Starstruck003: My Date with Resident Evil 4

Wow! Thats all I can say. (NOTE: PROBABLE/OBVIOUS SPOILERS)

So, we last saw our heroes (me) with a huge backlog and a plan.  A mission to do something totally awesome, and it wouldn’t be easy.  It would take time, and it would take discipline.  It would be AWESOME.

In Starstruck002, I made it public domain that I was to set sail on Resident Evil 4(GC version), and would attempt to do it in one sitting.  It was a Columbus-like voyage; maybe he did the same thing I did.  Who knows.

Enough chit chat, lets get down to business!..
